The House of Commons Library states that:

A total of 975,000 people aged 16-24 were NEET in the first quarter of 2014, 13.5% of people in this age group.  Not all unemployed 16-24 year olds are NEET and not all people who are NEET are  unemployed. 58% of unemployed 16-24 year olds are NEET, the remaining 42% are in  education or training. 52% of people who are NEET are unemployed, the rest are  economically inactive: not seeking work and/or not available to start work.

In England, the North East, West Midlands, and the North West have the highest proportion  of 16-24 year olds who are NEET. Those eligible for free school meals, those who have been excluded or suspended from  school, those with their own child and those who have a disability are more likely to be  NEET. From the first quarter of 2007 to the first quarter of 2011, the NEET rate increased in all  OECD countries except Austria, the Czech Republic, Portugal, Sweden and Turkey.

Current Government schemes with elements aimed at reducing the number of young people  who are NEET include: raising the participation age, the Youth Contract and the Work  Programme.

In Essex the number of individuals who are NEET aged 16-24 years old stands at 2,237 16-19 year olds (end of Jan 2014). In Colchester its 300 16-19 year olds.

Go4 Interns about to start

Interns at Go4 Enterprises

Earlier this year we secured a grant of £8,000 from Colchester Borough Council. Part of this funding was match-funding for two internships. The rest of the funding is coming from Essex University. We are pleased to say that we have appointed two interns from the university who will be starting their internships in June.

One of them will be looking at Monitoring and Evaluation, helping us to provide evidence of the impact we are making. The other will be looking at Marketing and helping us to develop a marketing strategy for the future. Each internship lasts 3 months.

We will introduce them both once they start.

Go4 Enterprises has received confirmation that it has been awarded a grant of £7.500 from  the Partnership Investment Programme (Grants) of Colchester Borough Council.

The grant is to help Go4 Enterprises to assist more young people in the NEET category within the Colchester borough in this financial year 2012-2013.

We are very excited at this success, which will help move us forward with our objectives of helping more young people move into training, education and employment.

The initial payment of £3,500 is to help fund training and equipment. The remaining £4,000 will be paid on results. These are basically:

  • Provide reports on how many clients have gone into work or additional training, how many were male/female, ethnicity, location by ward etc.
  • Increase the number of hours of voluntary work undertaken by clients from 1,800 hours (figure for 2011-12) to 2,000 hours for 2012-2013.
  • Increase the number of clients that get back into work from 20% (2011-12) to 25% in 2012-2013.

We are well on the way to already meeting these objectives and are already looking at ways in which we can build on this grant and achieve even more.
